چکیده
Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, were exposed both acutely (96 h) and chronically (9 wk) to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of North Slope crude oil. Initial mean total PAH concentrations were approximately 10, 40 and 100 μg/L. Biological availability was suggested by a significant induction of hepatic cytochrome P450 content, ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Acute exposure caused a transient organismal stress response. Chronic exposure resulted in prolonged ionoregulatory disturbance and an inability to mount a successful stress response. Acute and chronic exposure also affected the ability of herring to swim. The time courses and magnitudes of several key post-exercise parameters including plasma cortisol, lactate and muscle glycogen indicated that recovery from exhaustive exercise was also affected. Short-term exposure to WSF significantly affected respiratory burst activity (RBA) in macrophages and plasma lysozyme concentrations. With subchronic exposure, RBT activity continued to be affected. Fish in the high treatment group were less susceptible to the pathogen Vibrio anguillarum following acute hydrocarbon exposure; however, this group was the most susceptible by the end of the experiment. This study shows that hydrocarbon exposure can affect several physiological systems of herring at low ppb concentrations resulting in decreased performance and potentially, their fitness.

Pacific herring (ClupeupulZasz) population biomass in Prince William Sound declined nearly 80% from 1992 to 1994. Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus probably contributed most to population decline in 1994. Viral prevalence in spring samples (n = 233-260/year) steadily decreased from 1994 to 1996 (4.7% 1.9% O.OO/), but prevalence increased to 15% in 1997 and 1998. Vial disease is acute (days to ...

Understanding the structure of Alaska’s Pacific herring stocks is relevant to how these exploited populations should be assessed and managed. We evaluated the capability of heart tissue fatty acid profiles and otolith microchemistry to identify the stock of origin for herring sampled from fourteen spawning aggregations associated with seven putative herring stocks throughout Alaska (e.g., Sitka...

Pristane concentrations in mussels were monitored at 30+ stations during spring and summer to compare nearshore feeding conditions for juvenile pink salmon and herring. The dominant-biomass zooplankter of PWS (Neocalanus plumchrus) contains about 1 % pristane, a refractory hydrocarbon. Fecal material produced consequent to predation on Neocalanus contains un-absorbed pristane that may be accumu...

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in March 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and was one of the worst environmental disasters on record in the United States. Despite long-term data collection over the nearly three decades since the spill, tremendous uncertainty remains as to how significantly the spill affected fishery resources. Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) and some wild Pacific sal...

The Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) population in Prince William Sound, Alaska crashed in 1993 and has yet to recover, affecting food web dynamics in the Sound and impacting Alaskan communities. To help researchers design and implement the most effective monitoring, management, and recovery programs, a Bayesian assessment of Prince William Sound herring was developed by reformulating the curr...
